A fanciful amalgamation of Eurich's childhood memories and favourite motifs, 'Queen of the Sea' is based on a summer he spent in Whitby in 1911, the Coronation year. The scene teems with details that delighted the artist as an eight-year-old, including an aviary of colourful birds, orchestra, hot air balloon, flags, ships and harlequins. The boy Eurich observes the festivities in pyjamas from an upstairs window. A plaque below reads 'Richard Eurich stayed here, 1911'.
