Established in 1707 it did not receive a Royal Charter until 1751.

The aims of the Society remain unchanged. These being, "the encouragement, advancement and furtherance of the study and knowledge of the antiquaries and history of this and other countries".

The exploration of these aims has led the society into various, and sometimes strange, pursuits. In the main these could be said to encompass archaeology, cultural history, conservation, heraldry and anthropology.

The society possesses a fine library, archive and collection. It's most notable possession is probably the Winton Domesday, a twelth century survey of Winchester, similar in nature to the Domesday book.
