Incorporated Society of Artists of Great Britain

Formed 1759 after the annual feast of St. Luke at the Foundling Hospital. Early meetings were held at the Turks Head Tavern. The society was the first to mount regular public exhibitions of painting and sculpture in the UK. Leading members seceded from the society in 1768, a move leading directly to the formation of the Royal Academy of Arts. The society was dissolved 1791 after years of decline.
