Content DescriptionHe has tarried in order to copy works by the old masters, most recently a Marraige of Canaan by Paolo Veronese; he will bring to Lawrence an honorary diploma from the Imperial and Royal Academy of Venice, they elected Etty at the same meeting; prints of English artists are everywhere in France, he names Stothard, Smirke, Westall and Wilkie; he laments the state of French art, Gérard is universally popular, but he marvels at the level of state patronage available to artists in France, Gerard in particular; he provides some account of his journey from Italy with Mr. Evans and elaborates on his admiration for Giulio Romano; he is impressed by the statue of Venus in the Louvre and believes Chantrey has a cast; he has heard rumours of a national gallery and Fuseli's ill-health.
