The first plate forms a divisional title-plate, reading 'Illustrations Targets & Shields'. The following six plates show: 1. Macdonald Target; 2, 3. Highland Targets; 4. Bronze Shields; 5. Various Shields For Comparison; 6. Roman Legionary Sculptured Stone. The in-text illustrations show parts of shields.
James Drummond combined the career of a history painter with that of a student of European and Asian antiquities, and read many papers before the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
