Summary NoteThe Preface states that 'This work is the fruit of several tours made in Etruria between the years 1842 and 1847'. On his tours of 1842-3 Dennis was accompanied by the artist Samuel J. Ainsley. The text of the first volume describes Veii, Castel Giubileo / Fidenæ, Sutri / Sutrium, Nepi / Nepete, Civita Castellana / Falerii (Veteres), Falleri / Falerii (Novi), Fescennium, Orte / Horta, Feronia and Capena, Monte Cimino / Mons Ciminus, Viterbo / Surrina, Ferento / Ferentium, Bomarzo, castel D'Asso / Castellum Axia, Norchia / Orcle?, Bieda / Blera, Corneto / Tarquinii, Graviscæ, Vulci, Musignano, Toscanella / Tuscania, Statonia, Pitigliano and Sorano, Sovana / Suana, Bolsena / Volsinii, Monte Fiascone / Fanum Voltumnæ?, Orvieto. That of Volume II describes Civita Vecchia / Centum Cellæ, Santa Marinella / Punicum, Santa Severa / Pyrgi, Cervetri / Agylla or Cære, Palo / Alsium, Luni / Luna, Pisa / Pisæ, Firenze / Florentia, Fiesole / Fæsulæ, Siena / Sena, Volterra / Volaterræ, Maremma, Populonia, Roselle / Rusellæ, Telamone / Telamon, Orbetello, Ansedonia / Cosa, Vetulonia, Saturnia, Chiusi / Clusium, Cetona and sarteano, Chianciano and Montepulciano, Arezzo / Arretium, Cortona, Perugia / Perusia, Rome. The book was hailed as a highly readable and important contribution to scholarship. A revised edition was published in 1878.

The plates are captioned. The frontispiece of Volume I shows an 'Etruscan Mirror ...', the plate at p.235 the 'Valley Of Tombs, Castel D'Asso', that at p.399 the 'Ponte Della badia, Vulci', that at p.442 'Campanari's Garden, Toscanella'; the frontispiece of Volume II shows 'The Farewell Of Admetus And Alcestis from an Etruscan vase ...' . In-text illustrations show views of sites, plans and maps, and Etruscan antiquities and inscriptions.

The frontispiece of Volume II is printed in color.
Responsibility NoteThe frontispieces are unsigned; but that in Vol. I is described in the List Of Illustrations as drawn on wood by G. Scharf. The three plates in Volume I are signed as drawn by George Dennis and lithographed by Day & Son.

In-text illustrations are unsigned but are described in the List Of Illustrations as by 'G.D.' or as derived from other sources (Dr Braun, Giovanelli, Museo Gregoriano, Micali, Museo Chiusino, Campana, 'Bull. Inst.', 'Monumenti Inediti dell'Instituto', 'Annali dell'Instituto', Dempster, S[amuel] J. Ainsley, Gruner, Visconti). Most maps are described as adapted from earlier sources (Gell, Westphal, Knapp, Canina, Micali, Segato).

The printer's names are given on the versos of the half-titles and in the colophons: 'London: Bradbury and Evans, Printers, Whitefriars.'
