Not only was William Chambers instrumental in encouraging George III to patronize the Royal Academy and the Academy's Treasurer for twenty-eight years but he also designed its home, Somerset House. Reynolds emphasises Chambers' professional status by depicting him at work porte crayon in hand. The Strand front of Somerset House, his latest architectural achievement can be seen in the background.
