Summary NotePilkington's biographic dictionary had been first published in 1770 as The Gentleman's and Connoisseur's Dictionary of Painters. It is retitled A Dictionary of Painters in Fuseli's editions (1805 and 1810); and A General Dictionary of Painters in editions after 1824.

As the title claims, Fuseli's 'Alterations' and 'Additions' are 'Considerable'. They include hostile comments on Dürer and his circle, and biographies of Fuseli's father and brothers.
Responsibility NoteThe printer's name is repeated in the colophon.

The dedication is a reprint of that of the first edition, and carries the date of Dec. 2, 1770. It is by Matt. Pilkington 'To The President And Council Of The Royal Academy Of Painting, In London.'
