Singleton's painting depicts Royal Academicians assembled in the Council Room at Somerset House but not a specific event, since it includes Sir William Chambers who died in 1796 and Sir William Beechey who became an Academician two years later.
The canvas was commissioned so that Charles Bestland (fl. 1783-1837) could make an engraving from it. Whereas his engraving was published in 1802, the painting itself was not exhibited until 1822. |
