|Summary Note||Plates 2-15 reproduce details of Pietro da Cortona's ceiling in the Gallery of Palazzo Pamphili, Piazza Navona, Rome, which he executed for Pope Innocent X (Pamphili) between 1651 and 1654. The theme of the paintings is divine providence revealed in the history of Innocent X, with subsidiary scenes drawn from the legend of Aeneas, from whom the Pamphili claimed descent. The last plate (pl. 16) carries the dedication of the engraver, Cesi.|
Cesi was a pupil of Cortona. He had published a series of prints after Annibale Carracci's frescoes in the Farnese gallery (1657) before publishing this series after Cortona's work in the Palazzo Pamphili (1661). As a faithful representation of the originals, these etchings were highly admired.
|Responsibility Note||No plate is signed.|
Three carry the publisher's imprint of 'Gio. Iacomo Rossi' (pl. 8, 9, 16).
The work is dedicated by the engraver, Carlo Cesio, to the nephew of the late pope, Innocent X (that is, Prince Camillo Pamphili).
