Summary NoteVolume I carries the publication-date of 1835; Volumes II-IV, that of 1845.

Champollion made his record in Egypt in 1828-9 (when the French expedition was accompanied by a Tuscan expedition led by I. Rosellini). Although he is best known as a linguist and the principal contributor to the decipherment of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, most of the plates in these four volumes show not inscriptions but wall-paintings and intaglio sculptures. These show gods and goddesses, Pharaohs and military campaigns, and the daily life of ancient Egyptians at work and leisure.

The following plates are printed in color: Vol. I. frontis., pl. 3, 11-17bis, 26-29, 34-36, 45, 54, 59, 73, 78, 91ter, 92, 93; Vol. II. pl. 144, 164, 168, 174; Vol. III. pl. 258, 260-4, 266; Vol. IV. pl. 350-4, 361-363 bis, 393 bis, 426, 428 ter, 428 quater, 429.
Responsibility NoteMost plates are signed by draughtsmen, engraver and lithographer. The draughtsmen were A. Ricci (once written Rizzi), Al. Duchesne, S. Cherubini, N. Lhôte (also written L'hôte), A. Bertin, Angelelli (occasionally written Angeletti), Champollion, Le Houx (also written Lehoux and once La Houx), Géatan Rosellini. The engraver was Ar. Rey. Lithographers were Chles. Motte, L. Letronne, Kaeppelin et Cie. or J. Baouset. Four plates in Vol. I (frontis., pl. 27-9), three in Vol. III (258, 260, 266) and eight in Vol. IV (350-4, 361, 362, 363 bis, 393 bis) are signed as lithographed by H. Roux ainé and chromolithographed by J. Engelmann; additionally, one in Vol. II. (no. 174) and four in Vol. III (261-4) are signed as chromolithographed by J. Engelmann.
