Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin

Born: 20 Jul 1766
Died: 4 Nov 1841
Soldier, politician, diplomat, collector, owner of quarries and coal-mines. While British ambassador to the Ottoman Sultan 1798-1803 he received permission to remove sculpture from the acropolis of Athens. Father of James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin (1811-63), and Sir Frederick W.A. Wright-Bruce (1814-67).
