Founded in 1807 by Adam Black in Edinburgh, A & C Black has built it's reputation by publishing canonical works of reference and illustrated books. The success of the firm was cemented by the purchase in 1827 of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and of the works of Walter Scott in 1851. After moving to Soho Square in 1889 the company continued to grow, acquiring 'Who's Who' in 1896.

Steadily adding series and companies as the 20thC progressed, A & C Black was purchased by Bloomsbury Plc in 2000.
