Lawyer, archaeologist; writer on law and archaeology; active in London and the West Country. Son of painter Robert Smirke R.A. (1753-1845); brother of architects Sir Robert Smirke, R.A. (1780-1867) and Sydney Smirke R.A. (1798-1877), draughtsman Richard Smirke (1778-1815) and painter Mary Smirke (1779-1853).
